December 15th Update: Click this link to read the latest on the proposed Frederick County incinerator.

If approved by the Frederick Board of County Commissioners a major trash burning incinerator would be built just off Route 85 (Buckystown Pike) south of Westview Shopping Center on Metropolitan Court and English Muffin Way on the west bank of the Monocacy River. The pollution plume from the incinerator could conceivably blanket Frederick City (pop 75,000+), Ballenger Creek, Linganore, Francis Scott Key Mall, the Golden Mile, and schools and schoolyards throughout the County.

The Commission has cited numerous reasons supporting their consideration of the proposed Waste-to-Energy (WTE) incinerator:

  • High costs associated with increasing recycling efforts;
  • Frederick County residents producing 700 to 800 tons of trash daily, 6 days per week, 52 weeks of the year;
  • Future closing of Virginia’s mega-landfill that currently accepts our trash;
  • Costs associated with compacting and shipping Frederick County waste out of state;
  • Difficulties agreeing to citing a new landfill in Frederick County that would require several hundred acres of land.

    All residents are encouraged to share their ideas, questions and/or concerns with the Commissioners. While the Commissioners are bound to the realities of finding a place to dump hundreds of tons of trash, they have expressed and interest in hearing from the community.
